A broken Ryan O’Neal appeared on the “Today” show this morning (May 1) to discuss his children and life living with the late Farrah Fawcett.
The troubled father opened up in an interview with Matt Lauer, who asked if he was a bad parent, to which O’Neal responded, “Looks like it, doesn’t it? Sure looks like it.”
The 71-year-old actor blamed that fact that he “wasn’t trained” as a father, but claimed that his children are adults and are responsible for their actions now, adding, "Griffin is 45, Tatum is 49, who’s the other one? Redmond is 27. They have to take hold of their own existences.”
Three out of his four children have had run-ins with the law as well as drug addictions and trouble sparked when he and Farrah’s child, Redmond witnessed an argument between his parents at the age of 6 and threatened to stab himself if the two didn’t stop.
“He couldn’t stand it,” O’Neal told Lauer. “It stopped us, I must say. We put a stop to that. And we moved the knives up higher, harder to reach.”
He spoke about his book, “Both of Us: My Life with Farrah,” and how the woman he was with for more than 30 years was insecure at times and would spend long hours staring at herself in the bathroom mirror as she aged.
“Well it was possible she was just trying to keep away from me and stayed in the bathroom, I don’t know,” he said. “We were all in the bathroom for too long.”
Fawcett died of cancer in 2009, and the two never married. O’Neal was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and he has not started treatments. He said that Farrah was, “so strong and brave and never afraid for a minute. She always believed she’d be here on the show with us today. Now it’s just me.”
